45 Streets Band is a Christian rock band that started as the same time as TBC Next Generation, the youth group of Tokyo Baptist Church (TBC) in Daikanyama. The band members are of different nationalities including, of course, Japanese, as well as Americans, Germans, Chinese, Burmese, Filipino and others. Chris McCottry, the youth pastor who initially dreamed of becoming a rock star, began the band with the motive of bringing the teachings of Christianity to the streets. Instead of waiting for people to come to church, the band goes out into the streets to bring music to the people. As a result, 45 Streets Band is unique in that it is active outside the church. They have performed in the streets of Shibuya, at Aoyama Gakuin University, and at various live houses in Shibuya (Shibuya Deseo, GARRET udagawa, etc.) The band also has experience of performing overseas. Furthermore, every Sunday from 5:30pm, 45 Streets Band plays during the worship service at TBC.
The band plays a wide variety of music– mostly songs by Hillsong United, Planetshakers, Jesus Culture, 45 Streets Band (music and lyrics written by Chris Mccottry) and so forth. Because they play songs by overseas bands, the lyrics sung are generally in English. However, 45 Streets Band has some songs in Japanese.
Most songs created by 45 Streets Band can be listened to via SoundCloud. The band’s first CD is called Sovereign. Their second CD, Rising Son, was released on Saturday, September 5th, 2015.
